Implant Dentures
For the most lifelike function, you may want to consider an implant denture. This restoration option requires a greater time and financial commitment up front, but the results truly speak for themselves. Traditional dentures repair about 20% of chewing function, but implant retained prosthetics can replace 70% or more, allowing patients to eat a wider range of foods. Additionally, implant retained dentures can last for two or more decades with proper care compared with traditional dentures that need to be replaced every five to seven years.
Caring for Your Dentures
If you decided to move forward with an implant supported denture, you can continue to brush your teeth twice a day as usual. You may want to at least rinse your mouth with water between meals but brushing your implant denture to remove food particles after you eat will help prevent damage or excessive wear. You may also want to consider using a water flosser to clear away bacteria and plaque that can accumulate between your denture and gum line. If you have healthy teeth remaining, continue to brush and floss these teeth as usual. If you’re fully edentulous (without teeth), you should use a quality antimicrobial mouth rinse to remove bacteria and plaque from your gums. Most importantly, you should visit us two times each year for dental checkups. We’ll examine your denture and help you maintain the optimum fit and function.
